Game Developer: Roleplaying Games

Reports To:  RPG Producer

Status:  Full Time, Exempt

Location:  Remote (US-based)

SUMMARY

Renegade Game Studios is seeking a talented Game Developer: Roleplaying Games to join our growing RPG team. In this role, you will be a driving creative force behind the development of tabletop roleplaying game content such as writing, developing, and shaping books across Renegade’s diverse portfolio of licensed and original IPs. You will collaborate closely with our internal teams while managing relationships with our freelance contributors to deliver polished, world-class RPG products. If you have a deep passion for tabletop RPGs, a sharp editorial eye, and the ability to translate creative vision into compelling game experiences, we want to hear from you.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      Develop and edit manuscripts from freelance and staff writers into cohesive, polished RPG books that meet brand standards and creative vision.

      Write original content as a staff writer for Renegade’s RPG titles, including rules text, setting material, and adventure content.

      Provide detailed developmental feedback to writers throughout the revision process, ensuring consistency, clarity, and game balance.

      Incorporate feedback from sensitivity and accessibility readers appropriately and professionally into the final manuscript.

      Review final files prior to print for quality control, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guides.

      Maintain and apply individual brand style guides across all assigned projects.

      Develop and sustain deep expertise in the game systems Renegade publishes, including licensed systems such as D&D 5e, and proprietary systems.

      Become an expert on assigned brands and IPs, partnering with licensors and brand stakeholders to ensure content authenticity and approval compliance.

      Contribute to game system design and mechanical development for new and existing Renegade titles.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      Write art descriptions and map briefs; direct book layout and art placement in collaboration with the Creative Director.

      Participate in playtesting and provide structured feedback to support game balance and player experience.

      Stay current on trends in the tabletop RPG marketplace, emerging game systems, and community expectations.

      Support brand and marketing teams with game related content, copy review, and product positioning guidance.

INTERACTIONS

This position works closely with the internal RPG team, Brand, Production, Art, and Marketing departments, as well as external freelance writers, editors, and licensed IP holders.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages and supervises freelance writers and contractors assigned to RPG projects, including onboarding, creative briefing, deadline management, and quality review.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

      3+ years of professional experience developing or editing tabletop RPG books (required).

      3+ years of professional experience writing for tabletop RPG products (required).

      Published RPG credits required; candidates must submit a list of credits with a description of their role on each project.

      Experience with game system design and mechanical development strongly preferred.

      Experience working with IP licensors a significant plus.

      Experienced with Microsoft Office Suite and Shared Drives.

      Art direction or layout experience a plus.

      Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and/or InCopy, is a plus.

      Bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts, game design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

      Proven expertise as a writer and developer of tabletop RPG content, demonstrated by a strong body of published work.

      Deep familiarity with tabletop RPG game systems and design philosophy, with the ability to quickly learn new systems and rulesets.

      Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write compelling prose and clear, precise rules text.

      Strong developmental editing skills with an eye for narrative consistency, mechanical clarity, and game balance.

      Ability to deliver high-quality work under deadline pressure with minimal supervision.

      Strong organizational and project management skills; comfortable managing multiple active projects simultaneously.

      Strong leadership, interpersonal, and relationship-building abilities, particularly with creative contributors.

      Collaborative, professional demeanor with the ability to communicate effectively across creative and business teams.

      Self-directed and proactive; exercises sound independent judgment and escalates appropriately.
